Our Company

Armstrong Machine Company, Inc. was started in 1974 in Armstrong, Iowa by Cliff Porter and his late wife Sharon. Cliff was working in the well drilling and pump repair industry. In addition to caring for their home and two daughters, Sharon kept busy working outside the home for the local school, while maintaining the bookkeeping for the well drilling business.

Armstrong Machine Company began in a very small shed near Cliff and Sharon’s home where one employee was kept on to ship out parts to Cliff in the field. In 1977, Cliff sold his well drilling business due to a health scare and shortly after his recovery, Armstrong Machine picked up operations in Pocahontas, Iowa where the family had relocated. This time, the business was being run out of the Porter family home and their small garage, though soon after they were able to construct a building to house the manufacturing operations and Cliff purchased his first manual lathe. By 1988, the growth of the company demanded more space and so another building was put up. However, that building was also outgrown within a few short years.

Cliff purchased property adjacent to the existing property where they built a large steel building. This is where the pump repairs took place (and still do today), as well as where the steel tubing was stored. By 2002, another building had to be added to house the new heat-treating facility and steel storage was transferred to that building. Then in 2005, yet another matching steel building was added to house the shipping department, the office, and our wide variety of manual and computer operated lathes.

Currently, the company is run by Cliff, his two daughters Michelle and Roberta, and his grandson Chris. In addition to these key players, Cliff employs an average of 30 outstanding and highly trained people who keep the pumps repaired, the machines running, the phones answered and the customers satisfied. At this time we are providing parts and service to customers in all 50 United States and in approximately 45 foreign countries. It is our hope that we can continue to grow and serve our customers for many years to come.
